Trade dispute of the week

This article made me laugh. It's from the Sunday Times this past weekend:

"An official union of Indian eunuchs has called on police to take action against beggars who are only pretending to be castrated. The Uttar Pradesh Eunuchs Association says the fake eunuchs have been arriving at weddings, engagement parties and other social functions to beg for cash. Genuine eunuchs have been confronting the imposters and demanding to check their private parts, and now want police to do the same. The eunuchs collect money from social events, often by threatening to expose themselves."

Beggars who are only pretending to be castrated??? WTF?!? Why are people giving money to eunuchs anyway? Actually, even more intriguing than that--why are there eunuchs in the first place--especially enough eunuchs to require an official union?? Is it some sort of fashion statement? If so, it's kind of dumb since you can't see if someone is or isn't castrated. Hmmm... Anyone know what's up with this, if so, please comment and spill the beans...

With that many eunuchs, they should be able to get a good choir together. There hasn't been any good "castrato" music in a loooooong time.
